I am Angelien Ottenhof and I work as a manager at the VAVO Lyceum in Utrecht en Veenendaal. Together with my colleges Ankie Labordus (manager) and Jan van Hardeveld (rector) we are responsible for our secondary school for adults.
The VAVO Lyceum (about 1100 students, 70 teachers, 4 locations) is a part of ROC Midden Nederland (over 90% is mbo: intermediate vocational education, over 396 courses, 24.000 students and 2000 staff)
In our school we teach 17 different subjects at the level of the last two years of the three “highest” streams: vmbo, havo en vwo.
Successfully completing a particular stream grants access to different levels of tertiary education. After vmbo, a pupil can continue training at the mbo ("middle-level applied education"). A havo diploma allows for admission to the hbo ("higher professional education"), which are universities of professional education. Only with vwo can a pupil enter into a research university. We have a special stream for immigrants with a secondary education in their home country. In one year they improve their Dutch (Dutch as a second language) and they take courses at havo-level relevant for their study at a university.
I have a master degree in biophysics. In combination with little children I started my working career at an evening school for havo en vwo, as a teacher in biology. I have been participant in/leader of many innovating projects in education.
My son Bart is fitness manager en psycho motorial therapeutist and father of my granddaughter Carlijn. My son Joris is a PhD in biomedical science and researcher at a cancer institute in Amsterdam.
I live in Austerlitz, a small village (1500 inhabitants) in the woods on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (Utrecht chain of (very small!!!) hills).
When the children where younger we always went in our summer holydays to the Alps in Austria or Switzerland for mountaineering.
4 years ago my husband died. Now I am living alone with my dog Beer (Australian Shepherd) and cat Amber (the result of an Abyssinian male meeting a Russian Blue female).
In a long vacation I love to travel to meet other cultures and hike the country. I have been in different countries and have still a list “where I want to go to”.
At home I try to stay in shape by running with the dog (so called Canicross, see Google!).
The dog is also in course: he is learning sheep herding, and I learn to play the shepherd.
Other hobby’s are: reading literature during holydays, painting (oil paint), photography, bridge (beginner), handcraft.
